Man who harassed officers during Jan. 6 Capitol riot arrested on charges related to attack

Tommy Tatum, known for harassing police officers who testified in Jan. 6 cases, has been arrested in Mississippi for his involvement in the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He faces a felony charge of civil disorder and misdemeanor charges for obstructing law enforcement officers. Tatum previously provided testimony for a Jan. 6 defendant, Brian Mock, who was convicted and sentenced to federal prison. Tatum was documented on video provoking and taunting police officers during the Capitol attack, encouraging others to take their helmets and using a flagpole to approach officers. He was part of a crowd that surged against officers in the lower west tunnel of the Capitol.

Tatum’s arrest comes as part of the ongoing legal proceedings against those involved in the Jan. 6 attack, with over 1,400 individuals charged and over 1,000 convictions secured. Sentences have ranged from a few days to 22 years in federal prison for individuals convicted of serious offenses like seditious conspiracy. Tatum’s case highlights the variety of individuals involved in the attack, from those actively engaging in violence to those harassing law enforcement officers. The FBI affidavit against Tatum demonstrates his active participation in the aggression towards police officers during the Capitol attack.
