A network of pro-Kremlin accounts on X pushed fake Fox News articles ahead of the presidential debate, spreading false narratives about Donald Trump’s support in the business community. The fake articles directed people to a fake version of Fox News’ website, part of a known Russian disinformation campaign called the doppelgänger network. This campaign mimics legitimate news websites and has been identified by researchers. The messages posted on X from these accounts included claims about Trump being the only hope for recovery and dehumanizing language about immigrants. The manipulation efforts aimed to influence social media discussion around the debate and sow division in the U.S.
The fake Fox News website and X accounts show how foreign manipulation efforts have evolved, with the website looking almost identical to the real Fox News site and the articles using the name of a real Fox News reporter. Despite the convincing appearance of the accounts, they often fail to engage with authentic U.S. audiences. The doppelgänger network predominantly poses as conservative voters to spread manufactured articles on various topics. Despite the widespread dissemination of fake news, the network’s efforts do not appear to be gaining substantial engagement from real U.S. audiences. The manipulation tactics used in this campaign are similar to those seen in previous election cycles, aiming to influence public opinion and create division within the country.
