A recent viral social media post falsely claimed that an image showing a group of all white people picnicking was taken at a Black church in Detroit where former President Donald Trump spoke. The post, which garnered over 900 likes, insinuated that the attendees at the event were all white. However, it was later revealed that the image was actually from 2023 and featured several celebrities gathered at a lodge in Idaho. Among the celebrities in the photo were CNN anchor Jake Tapper, late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon, and actress Jennifer Aniston.
The false claim was debunked by fact-checkers who confirmed that the image had no connection to the Detroit event where Trump spoke. The audience at the church in Detroit was reported to be diverse, with a mix of white and Black attendees. The original source of the photo, actress Kristen Bell, had shared it on Instagram during a trip to a fishing lodge co-owned by Jimmy Kimmel.
USA TODAY was unable to reach the social media user who shared the misleading claim for comment. Lead Stories also confirmed that the post was false. It is crucial to fact-check and verify information before sharing it on social media to prevent the spread of misinformation.
