The Nyssa community is recovering after experiencing severe damage from a microburst that hit the area. The National Weather Service confirmed that the storm was a wet microburst caused by a supercell thunderstorm. The storm’s powerful straight-line winds caused significant damage, including flattened crops, ripped siding, and shattered power poles. Residents came together to help each other and start cleanup efforts.
The NWS reported wind gusts of 75-80 mph, equivalent to a category 1 hurricane. Several residents suffered injuries, with one person breaking their arm from flying debris. The storm also caused minor flooding in some areas. Power was out for 12 hours before being restored, and now residents are focused on rebuilding, tree removal, and cleanup efforts.
The community is hiring contractors for estimates on repair and cleanup. Despite the destruction, roads are open and clear of flooding. Nyssa residents have shown resilience and unity in the face of the disaster, working together to rebuild and recover. The community spirit and support have been key components in helping residents cope with the aftermath of the microburst.
