President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa recently announced the largest cabinet in the nation’s democratic history, with 32 ministers and 43 deputy ministers, totaling 75 executives. This decision came after his party, the African National Congress, failed to secure an absolute majority in Parliament, resulting in a coalition government that includes 11 parties.
Critics have questioned whether the significantly larger cabinet will complicate efforts to address the country’s economic and social challenges, such as high unemployment and entrenched poverty. Some have accused the move of being driven by a desire for power and positions rather than focusing on policy and serving the people.
Despite the criticisms, President Ramaphosa and other party leaders have emphasized the importance of the unity government in setting the country on the right path. The cabinet formation process was marked by tense negotiations, especially between the ANC and the Democratic Alliance, resulting in a government of national unity.
The new cabinet includes members from various parties, with the Democratic Alliance receiving six ministers and six deputy ministers, and other smaller parties also being represented. Notably, land reform has been separated into a separate ministry, with the Pan Africanist Congress leader appointed as the minister.
As South Africa moves forward, stakeholders believe that the focus should now shift towards creating and enacting policies to address critical issues facing the country. This moment is seen as an opportunity for social movements, civil society, and ordinary citizens to participate in shaping the future direction of the nation.
