Trump granted immunity by Supreme Court for some election interference charges

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that former President Donald Trump has immunity for some of his conduct as president in his federal election interference case but not for others, adding another obstacle for special counsel Jack Smith in taking the case to trial. Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results will not be dismissed, but some actions closely related to his core duties as president are off-limits to prosecutors. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority, stating further proceedings are necessary to determine what conduct Trump can be prosecuted for. The indictment alleged that Trump sought to pressure the Justice Department to investigate unfounded claims of widespread election fraud and pressured Vice President Mike Pence to reject the election results leading up to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6. The court also ruled that none of the conduct for which Trump is immune can be admitted as evidence at trial in any form. The case, unprecedented as no president has ever been prosecuted after leaving office, has put the national spotlight on the court. The trial likely won’t conclude before Election Day due to potential delays. The ruling could have broad ramifications, protecting presidents for a wide range of actions. Trump is currently facing four criminal prosecutions.
