Princess Anne of the United Kingdom expressed deep regret for being unable to attend a World War I commemoration event in Canada due to injuries she sustained. The Princess Royal, 73, was recovering from minor injuries and a concussion after spending five nights in the hospital following an incident at her home in England. The cause of her injury is believed to have been from an impact with a horse.
Despite her absence, Princess Anne sent warm wishes for the commemoration and expressed fond memories of previous events she had attended in Canada. Her statement was read by Canada’s Governor-General Mary Simon at the Newfoundland National War Memorial on Canada Day.
Princess Anne’s husband, Tim Laurence, confirmed that she was recovering well and thanked the medical team, hospital staff, and emergency services for their care. The Princess had previously joined commemorations in Canada and had been scheduled to attend the ceremony marking the centennial of the Newfoundland National War Memorial.
The Princess Royal’s absence was keenly felt at the event, but her heartfelt message and well wishes were appreciated by those in attendance. Her dedication to honoring the sacrifices of those who served in World War I was evident in her statement, despite not being able to physically be present at the ceremony.
