Drivers heading north on highway 97 are making hazardous u-turns near the new Bend bypass, causing concern among locals | Local News

Drivers in Bend are facing confusion and challenges following the opening of the new northbound Highway 97 bypass. The new configuration of the Bend North Corridor Project, which starts at Empire Avenue, has led to drivers making u-turns on the highway just north of Grandview Avenue. This behavior has raised safety concerns and prompted the Oregon Department of Transportation to issue a warning against making u-turns on the highway.

The new bypass provides access to Highway 20, Business 97, and various shopping centers on the north end of the city. However, some drivers are still getting accustomed to the changes and inadvertently missing their exits, leading to the risky maneuver of making u-turns on the highway. ODOT spokesperson Kacey Davey emphasized the dangers of this practice and encouraged drivers to follow the designated routes.

In addition to the confusion around the new bypass, residents near the project area have also noticed an increase in traffic speed, making it difficult for them to safely enter the highway. To navigate the changes effectively, drivers are advised to follow the signs, use the designated exits, and avoid making u-turns on the highway. The southbound lanes of Highway 97 will remain on the existing parkway until the completion of the new southbound lanes in mid-August. As drivers continue to adjust to the new configuration, ODOT is emphasizing the importance of safe and responsible driving to prevent accidents and ensure a smooth traffic flow in Bend.
