Oregon Cities May Break Record with Five Consecutive Days of Temperatures Above 100 Degrees

The Willamette Valley is bracing for an upcoming heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach near triple digits for five consecutive days. The region last experienced such extreme temperatures in 1941 when Portland baked in five days of 100-degree weather. Meteorologists are predicting that most major cities in the Willamette Valley will see temperatures ranging from 100 to 105 degrees until Tuesday.

While the heatwave is expected to last until mid-week, the extreme temperatures are unlikely to reach the levels seen in 2021 when the state recorded 117-118 degrees. Elevated fire danger is a concern during the heatwave, but red flag warnings are not expected due to the lack of significant winds that could exacerbate fire risk.

For those looking to escape the heat, the Oregon Coast remains the best option with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, thanks to the onshore flow from the ocean. The heatwave is attributed to a heat dome, a strong ridge of high pressure that pushes down and heats up the air in combination with hot air masses from the southwest.

While the Willamette Valley prepares for the extreme temperatures, residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and seek shelter in air-conditioned spaces. The duration of the heatwave will depend on the ocean breeze pushing into the valley, with temperatures expected to cool down by mid-week.
