Gaza sees deadly strikes as truce talks approach | World News

Israel conducted airstrikes in Gaza that killed 16 people at a UN-run school, as violence also erupted on the northern border with Lebanon. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, now in its tenth month, continue with Israel sending a delegation to Qatar for talks with Hamas. Despite ongoing negotiations, gaps remain in securing a ceasefire and a hostage release deal.

The fighting in Gaza led to casualties, including 16 deaths at a school sheltering displaced people, and additional fatalities from airstrikes in refugee camps. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees reported the deaths of four journalists and two of its employees. The US has been involved in mediating talks and expressed optimism about the prospects of a truce deal.

Hamas has proposed new ideas to move the negotiation process forward, with pressure mounting for a hostage release deal. The war began with Hamas’s attack on southern Israel, resulting in civilian casualties and hostages. Israel’s military offensive has caused further deaths and destruction in Gaza, leading to a humanitarian crisis.

The conflict has also escalated on the border with Lebanon, with cross-border exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah. Fears of a larger conflict involving Iran have arisen as attacks have intensified. Recent incidents include Israel downing hostile aircraft launched from Lebanon and targeting Hezbollah terror targets in southern Lebanon.

The situation remains volatile with ongoing violence and urgent calls for a lasting ceasefire and resolution to the longstanding conflict between Israel and Hamas.
