Conservative group attempts last-minute effort to sway Democratic primary in Oregon congressional race

A group dedicated to electing conservative women to Congress, the Winning For Women Action Fund, paid for advertisements supporting an Oregon Democratic candidate who ultimately lost in the May primary. The ads were in support of Jamie McLeod-Skinner, who was defeated by Janelle Bynum. The filings revealed concerns about GOP interference in the election and indicated that Republicans saw McLeod-Skinner as the preferred candidate to face Bynum.

The race for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, one of the most closely contested in the country, was decided by just two percentage points in 2022. The winner of this race could potentially determine which party controls Congress, leading to an influx of money and influence.

The advertisements were from a recently formed political action committee called Health Equity Now, which supported McLeod-Skinner’s views on healthcare. The group drew attention for its connections to Republicans and their involvement in the Democratic primary.

Winning For Women, which did not comment on the situation, has endorsed many women for Congress, including Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who narrowly defeated McLeod-Skinner in 2022. Both candidates are now facing off in the upcoming election, with Chavez-DeRemer having a significant fundraising advantage over Bynum. Super PACs are not allowed to coordinate with members of Congress during campaigns.

This race is one of several where outside spending has played a significant role, highlighting the influence of money in politics. With the high stakes involved, the competition between candidates is fierce as they vie for control of Congress.
