Two brothers from Oregon have pleaded guilty for their involvement in the January 6th insurrection in 2021 at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Matthew Leland Klein, 28, pleaded guilty to civil disorder and entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds. His brother, Jonathanpeter Allen Klein, 24, pleaded guilty to civil disorder and assault on certain officers. According to court records, the brothers traveled from Portland to Philadelphia on January 4th, 2021, to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally and later joined the crowd that stormed the Capitol.
Jonathanpeter threw a piece of audiovisual equipment intended for President Joe Biden’s upcoming inauguration at an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department. The officer suffered a blow to his helmet, lost consciousness, and struggled to gain his footing. The brothers, along with other insurrectionists, broke into the Capitol building but were separated.
Civil disorder carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, supervised release of up to three years, and a $250,000 fine. Assaulting an officer could lead to up to eight years in prison with similar penalties. Entering a building on restricted grounds carries a maximum sentence of ten years.
The Kleins are among many individuals facing charges related to the January 6th insurrection as investigations continue into the events of that day. The guilty pleas by the brothers highlight the consequences many are facing for their roles in the violent breach of the Capitol.
