Portland Commissioner Rene Gonzalez is receiving increased security protection from the city following a recent online threat against him. Two private security guards are now stationed inside Gonzalez’s City Council offices at the Portland Building. This additional security was recommended and approved by City Hall’s security manager after a threat assessment. The guards will remain in place for an indefinite period of time.
All Portland elected officials are entitled to extra security services with no added budgetary implications. The decision to enhance Gonzalez’s security measures was made in response to a heightened level of threats. This move is aimed at ensuring that elected officials can carry out their duties effectively and securely.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler also has his own security detail after facing a confrontation in public, leading him to pepper spray an aggressive individual. The latest security increase for Gonzalez comes after a social media post depicted him in the crosshairs of a firearm with a threatening message.
Portland police are investigating the online threat against Gonzalez, but no arrests have been made yet. Gonzalez has faced numerous concerning incidents in the past, including a car belonging to his relatives being torched outside his home. The commissioner has attributed the threats and attacks to his support for law enforcement and efforts to curb homeless street camping.
Despite the challenges he faces, Gonzalez remains committed to creating a safer and more livable Portland. City officials and staff are taking the threats seriously and are working to ensure the safety and security of Gonzalez and other elected officials.
