Eight congressional Democrats have joined the call for President Joe Biden to step aside as the party’s nominee, bringing the total to 30 lawmakers who want someone else to lead the ticket. New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich, the third Senate Democrat to call for Biden to leave the race, is among the new defections. House Democrats from various constituencies, including Rep. Marc Veasey from the Congressional Black Caucus and Rep. Chuy Garcia from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, have also urged Biden to bow out. The group praised Biden’s service but emphasized the need for a change in leadership to improve the Democrats’ chances against Republican Donald Trump in November.
Several members of Congress, including Rep. Zoe Lofgren, raised concerns about Biden’s age and fitness, warning that public perceptions could hinder the campaign. Rep. Sean Casten of Illinois and Rep. Greg Landsman of Ohio also called on Biden to drop out, citing concerns about his ability to shift the conversation and win the election. Despite the growing pressure, Biden’s campaign manager expressed confidence in his ability to defeat Trump and reiterated his commitment to staying in the race. Biden, backed by 14 million Democratic primary voters, has stated that he is in the race to win and will continue his campaign, despite the calls for him to step aside.
