Delaware 4-H is encouraging fair participants to stay active with their third annual Get Walking challenge at the Delaware State Fair. The contest, created by Lindsey Hughes and Kaitlin Rogers, determines the participant with the most steps each day. Initially for 4-H members, the competition now includes all fair attendees, with about 125 participants annually across eight age divisions.
Participants registered before the fair and logged their steps on a website. Winners in each age group will receive gift cards. The goal of walking across America and back has already been surpassed, motivating participants to strive for as many steps as possible.
The challenge aligns with Delaware 4-H’s Healthy Living Curriculum, promoting active lifestyles. By encouraging fair attendees to stay hydrated and active, the event supports the organization’s mission of healthy living. Participants are independently responsible for achieving their step goals, which has led to increased activity amongst attendees, with some choosing to take walks around the fairgrounds in the morning.
With the Get Walking challenge, Delaware 4-H is not only promoting physical activity but also engaging attendees in a fun and interactive way during the fair. The competition has become a valuable addition to the fair experience, motivating participants of all ages to prioritize their health and wellness while enjoying the festivities.
