Dog’s Bark Saves Owner with Dementia After Being Stranded in Utah Heat for Days

A woman with dementia went missing in Utah while walking her dog on a mountainside. The Emery County Sheriff’s Office, along with a police dog named Kip, searched for her in extreme heat reaching nearly 100 degrees. Despite the low chances of finding her, they heard a dog barking in the early hours of the morning and shifted the search in that direction. They were unsuccessful on the first day but then received a tip from a neighbor who also heard barking and saw surveillance footage of the woman walking with her dog. They continued the search in that direction and eventually found the missing woman, who was dehydrated and without shoes, but in good condition. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources credited the woman’s dog for saving her life by alerting the officers to her location. They expressed relief that she was found safe despite the challenging circumstances. The successful rescue highlighted the importance of having trained police dogs like Kip in search and rescue operations, especially in remote and challenging environments.
