A 160-pound Great Pyrenees dog was rescued from a steep mountain trail in Oregon with the help of officials from the Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District. The rescue took place on Saddle Mountain near Seaside, Oregon, the tallest mountain in Clatsop County. Photos of the rescue were shared on the fire district’s Facebook page, showing crew members carrying the injured dog down the mountain on a stretcher. The dog’s paws were cut and raw, and he needed assistance to get down from the trail.
According to District Capt. Shaunna White, the owners were with the dog when he refused to continue on the hike. Dogs are permitted on Saddle Mountain but must be on a leash at all times, and the trail can be rough on their paws. The mountain has welded wire fencing on the ground for traction, but it can be harsh on dogs’ paws, so dog booties are recommended for the trail.
The fire district emphasized the importance of gradually exposing dogs to rough surfaces to build up calluses on their paws. They suggested starting with shorter periods of time on rough terrain and using booties to protect dogs’ paws. The rescue highlighted the importance of being prepared when hiking with pets on challenging trails.
