Oregon is inviting feedback on updated wildfire hazard map

Oregon has released a new version of its wildfire hazard map and is seeking public comment on the changes made. The revised map now lists 20,000 fewer properties as high hazard, totaling 100,000 in that category. Changes to the map include removing hay and pasture lands from the high-hazard category and reducing the number of hazard levels to three: low, moderate, and high. Additionally, rules for agricultural lands have been updated, taking into account irrigation practices. Some residents, like Bob Hart from Jackson County, still feel the map unfairly categorizes their properties as high hazard, despite the changes. Hart is concerned about the potential costs associated with changes to building codes and regulations for residents in high-hazard zones. The state conducted job-fair style forums in impacted communities to address residents’ questions and concerns about the new map. Public comments can be submitted via email, as the state will not be hosting large public forums for feedback. Overall, the state is working to address public input and ensure that the new map accurately reflects wildfire risk in Oregon.
