Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed responsibility for a drone strike in Tel Aviv, Israel, killing one person and injuring eight. The drone strike is the first known attack on Tel Aviv by the Houthi group, which has been targeting Israel since the war on Gaza began. The drone strike hit an apartment building in central Tel Aviv, close to a US embassy office. Israeli military attributed the drone’s undetected presence to human error.
The Houthi spokesperson claimed the drone used in the attack was a new type named “Jaffa” capable of eluding Israel’s air defense systems. Analysts note that Tel Aviv has been largely untouched by the war on Gaza and see the attack as a sign of the growing reach of the Houthi arsenal.
The use of drones by the Houthis is not new, but this attack represents a significant escalation. Analysts believe this incident could lead to Israeli retaliation, although it is unclear how severe it may be. The Houthi group is allied with Iran, but it is uncertain to what extent Iran controls their actions. Iran’s support of the Houthis likely includes weapons and components, but the group has proven to be unpredictable.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation, given the potential for escalation in the already volatile region. Israel’s defense minister has threatened revenge for the attack, raising concerns about further violence. Despite the risks, both Iran and Israel have shown a willingness to avoid an all-out conflict that could engulf the Middle East.
