Pressure is mounting on President Joe Biden to end his re-election campaign as two more Democratic lawmakers, Senator Jon Tester and House Representative Jim Costa, have joined calls for him to step aside. Tester, the second senator to make this call, emphasized that while he has worked with Biden in the past, he does not believe the president should seek another term. Costa also suggested that Biden should pass the torch to the next generation.
These recent calls bring the total number of Congressional Democrats calling for Biden to drop out to 25. Concerns about Biden’s ability to defeat Republican challenger Donald Trump in November, based on his age and performance, have been raised by many within the party. Despite this, Biden has repeatedly refused to step aside, asserting that he is the most qualified candidate to defeat Trump.
Trump, who recently accepted the Republican nomination, has been gaining in the polls following Biden’s poor debate performance and concerns about his fitness. Some analysts believe Trump’s standing will continue to rise, especially after surviving an assassination attempt during a campaign rally. Polling averages show Trump currently ahead nationally by 3.1 percentage points.
As the pressure mounts on Biden to consider stepping down, the future of the Democratic ticket remains uncertain. With the election drawing closer, the Democratic Party faces the challenge of selecting a candidate who can best compete against Trump and secure victory in November.
