The Oregon High Desert Classic at the J Bar J Horse Fields is a showcase of skill and grace for riders and horses alike. Event Coordinator Crystal Weseman explains that the competition involves both hunters riding for style and grace, as well as jumpers competing for speed and height. Over 400 riders from across the northwest, including Montana, Nevada, California, and Canada, participate in this event which serves as a major fundraiser for J Bar J Youth Services, a nonprofit organization focused on positive change for youth.
Through the event, J Bar J is able to raise between $200,000 to $400,000, which significantly impacts their programs for kids. Exhibitor Rene Ruder, who has been a part of the event for a decade, emphasizes the importance of the High Desert Classic in the central Oregon equestrian community.
The High Desert Classic is held annually in the last two weeks of July, with Hayden Homes presenting this year’s event on July 17-21 and July 24-28. Spectators are welcome to attend free of charge, with food carts available for enjoyment. Weseman encourages those in the Bend area to come out and experience the beauty and excitement of this unique event. With its focus on raising funds for impactful programs and providing thrilling competition, the Oregon High Desert Classic is a must-see for all equestrian enthusiasts.
