The city of Coos Bay has been designated as an “Oregon Heritage All-Star Community” by the Oregon Heritage Commission. This recognition is given to communities that meet at least 15 of 24 criteria related to local heritage, including heritage tourism efforts, historic preservation programs, museums, and more. Coos Bay’s long and broad history, as well as the efforts of the city, tribes, museums, businesses, and community members to preserve and share local history, played a significant role in receiving this designation. A representative from the Oregon Heritage Commission will formally acknowledge the designation at the Coos Bay City Council work session on July 23, 2024.
Mayor Benetti expressed pride in receiving this recognition and emphasized the commitment of the community to continue preserving Coos Bay’s rich heritage for future generations. To maintain the All-Star status, the city must uphold at least 15 of the criteria and will receive technical assistance to sustain and expand heritage offerings and facilities. Coos Bay joins seven other All-Star communities in Oregon.
The Oregon Heritage Commission works to secure, sustain, and enhance Oregon’s heritage by sponsoring initiatives that educate the public about the value of heritage and celebrate the state’s diversity. Assistance is available for communities seeking to acquire Heritage All-Star Community status, including technical support, workshops, grants, and other resources.
