The Elks held their first annual picnic at the Heising summer resort on the Metolius, attended by hundreds from surrounding towns. The event included campfires, dancing, and a moonlight serenade. Additionally, five-year-old Robert Fairfield made history by climbing Bachelor Butte. Plans for new pavement on Hill Street were ordered, and the Prineville station of the Union Oil Co. was set to open.

75 years ago, construction began on a new ski tow at Hoodoo Bowl, adding to the three tows already in operation. Despite low rainfall, a stunning display of wildflowers was seen near Bend, with an abundance of monkey flowers blooming in the fields. In more recent news from 50 years ago, the COCC board approved a 10-year building plan for the college, prioritizing construction for various academic programs and additional facilities. The plan was based on enrollment projections showing the college nearly doubling in size by 1984. Additionally, Reub Long, a well-known desert philosopher, author, and conservationist from Fort Rock, passed away at the age of 76.
