Peter Courtney, Oregon’s most tenured state legislator, passes away at age 81

Peter Courtney, Oregon’s longest-serving lawmaker, passed away at the age of 81 due to complications from cancer. Serving 38 years in the Legislature, including 20 years as Senate president, Courtney was known for his bipartisan approach and skills as a dealmaker. He played a significant role in moving the Legislature to annual sessions, boosting K-12 school funding, and fighting for animal welfare.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised Courtney for his dedication to public service and his impact on the state. Despite his many accomplishments, Courtney was humble, often referring to himself as a “plow horse, not a show horse.”

Sen. Tim Knopp, a Republican who often clashed with Courtney, called him one of the most important political figures in Oregon’s history. Courtney’s legacy includes having various facilities named after him in Salem, where he lived.

Born in Philadelphia, Courtney moved to Salem in 1969 after securing a judicial clerkship. He leaves behind his wife, Margie, three sons, and seven grandchildren.

Courtney’s death marks the loss of a beloved and respected figure in Oregon politics. His legacy of bipartisanship, dedication to public service, and commitment to creating a better Oregon will endure for decades to come.
