A “wild land” fire on Ross Island in Southeast Portland on Saturday caused dark smoke to billow through the sky as Portland Fire and Rescue crews responded to the scene near the Willamette River east bank. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but officials suspect it may be linked to the island’s abandoned structures from the former Ross Island Sand and Gravel Co. Land-based crews have made access to what is on fire, including old abandoned equipment and tractor tires. The fire remains a developing story and updates will be provided by KOIN 6 News. Oregon wildfires are expected to be “extremely challenging” over the weekend, according to the fire marshal.
