As wildfires continue to ravage parts of Oregon and Washington, state officials are warning the public to be prepared for possible power outages. Oregon utility officials have stated that outages could occur unexpectedly, especially in eastern Oregon where wildfires are active. The Oregon Department of Emergency Management is urging residents to have enough fuel in their cars to evacuate if necessary. Utility companies may choose to shut off power in order to protect firefighting efforts, and power outages could also happen due to tree falls or accidents. It is recommended that residents be “two weeks ready” by stocking up on essentials such as food, medical supplies, and water. Those with a medical condition that requires power should notify their electricity provider. In addition, people should carry snacks and water in their vehicles, with a recommended one gallon of water per person per day. The Oregon Public Utility Commission also advised that outages may occur during the summer months as utility companies adjust their equipment settings. Stay informed and stay prepared to ensure the safety and well-being of yourself and your loved ones during this ongoing wildfire season.
