Park Fire in California Grows to 350,000 Acres, Wipes Out 134 Buildings

The largest wildfire currently burning in California, the Park Fire, has grown to over 350,000 acres as it spread from Butte to Tehama County. The blaze was allegedly started by a man who pushed a flaming vehicle into dried brush at a park in Chico. Firefighters have made progress in containing the fire, with it being 10% contained after three days of no containment. Mandatory and recommended evacuations were in effect in affected areas. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Butte, Tehama, and Plumas counties to aid fire victims. A grant from FEMA was secured to assist in battling the Borel Fire in Kern County. Current fires in California have burned over 626,600 acres, with a total of 102 large active wildfires nationwide. Climate change is believed to be exacerbating fire conditions, with fire weather watches and warnings in effect for several states. The cooling weather conditions have aided firefighters in battling the Park Fire near Paradise, which was devastated by the Camp Fire in 2018. The forecast predicts continued cool weather through midweek, before potential heat returns. Firefighters are taking advantage of the favorable weather conditions to attack the flames.
