North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has removed himself from consideration as a potential vice presidential candidate for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. Cooper cited timing and his commitment to potentially running for the U.S. Senate in 2026 as reasons for his decision. Despite withdrawing from consideration, he expressed his strong support for Harris’ presidential bid and belief that she will win the election.
Cooper’s decision was reportedly influenced by his desire to focus on a Senate run in the future, rather than pursue the vice presidential role. Other potential running mates for Harris include Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, among others.
Harris plans to announce her running mate by August 7, following President Joe Biden’s endorsement of her as the Democratic candidate. On the Republican side, Donald Trump has selected Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate for the 2024 election.
Cooper’s withdrawal from consideration underscores the competitive nature of the vice presidential selection process and the importance of timing and political ambitions in decision-making. Harris’ team continues to assess potential candidates as the campaign progresses towards the general election.
