Debby upgrades to Category 1 hurricane and is poised to hit Florida’s coast

Tropical Storm Debby strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 mph ahead of its anticipated landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The hurricane is expected to bring a storm surge of 2 to 10 feet and heavy rain, with up to 30 inches possible in some areas. Parts of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas are expected to receive significant rainfall. Tropical storm conditions are expected along Florida’s Gulf Coast through Sunday night, with hurricane conditions on the coast from the Suwannee River to Yankeetown. Governor Ron DeSantis compared Debby’s path to Hurricane Idalia, which caused significant damage in north Florida last year. Debby won’t have winds as strong as Idalia, but it will bring more moisture. The storm has already caused three deaths, left hundreds of thousands without power, and forced residents to swim out of their windows as water rushed in. Communities are now dealing with debris and preparing for the impact of the approaching hurricane.
