Secretary of Russia’s Security Council Sergei Shoigu traveled to Iran to meet Iran’s recently elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, in a meeting that emphasized accelerating their bilateral relationship.
During the meeting, Pezeshkian referred to Russia as one of Iran’s “countries-friends” and described their relationship as “strategic”. The two countries have a well-documented military alliance, with Iran providing Russia Shahed drones to fire on Ukraine. Pezeshkian also condemned the recent deaths of civilians in Gaza and the assassination of Hamas’ top leader Ismail Haniyeh, holding Israel responsible and stating there will be a response for their actions. He also criticized the United States, saying that the era of one-upmanship by powers like the US is over. Shoigu spoke about the importance of promoting a multipolar world for security and peace.

The European Commission has called for calm, and officials are continuing to work to diffuse tensions.
