Man in serious condition following suspected hate crime during UK riots; Archbishop Welby condemns rioters for desecrating the flag | Politics

A man in his 50s is in serious condition in a hospital in Belfast after being attacked in a suspected hate crime during a night of rioting. The man was stamped on by a crowd of several dozen people who also threw bricks, petrol bombs, and attempted to set a supermarket on fire, which is owned by an immigrant. Police are treating the attack as a hate crime and have arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of riotous behavior. The Stormont assembly is set to be recalled to discuss the disturbances and race relations.

In response to the riots, India has joined at least four other countries in warning its citizens about the dangers and advising them to avoid areas where protests are happening. The National Union of Students has offered support to communities affected by far-right rioting and violence, condemning the xenophobic, racist, and Islamophobic violence that has occurred.

Courts in England may sit through the night to swiftly see rioters in the dock, as the number of those arrested and charged continues to grow. Social media companies have been urged to take responsibility for not aiding the spread of disinformation and inflammatory content on their platforms. Elon Musk’s post about a “civil war” being inevitable amid the rioting has been criticized as deeply irresponsible.
