Elon Musk to Host Live Conversation with Donald Trump on X Platform
Elon Musk, the owner of the X platform, is set to host a live-streamed conversation with US presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Monday. However, ahead of the event, the EU’s internal market chief Thierry Breton has urged Musk to comply with legal obligations under the EU’s digital rulebook.
In a letter published on X, Breton emphasized the importance of ensuring that all proportionate and effective measures are in place to mitigate harmful content, especially during live streams. Failure to do so could have detrimental effects on civic discourse and public security, Breton warned.
The conversation between Musk and Trump is scheduled to be streamed live from Trump’s X channel. Trump recently made a return to the platform after Musk acquired it in 2022, following the former president’s ban for inciting the Capitol attacks in 2021.
Musk’s takeover of X has put him at odds with the EU, as the platform falls under stringent regulations outlined in the Digital Services Act. Breton has previously accused Musk of breaching the DSA, leading to Musk filing a lawsuit against the European Commission in July.
With tensions escalating, Breton’s latest correspondence highlights concerns about X’s role in spreading content that could incite violence or public disorder. Breton specifically mentioned X’s influence in the recent unrest in the UK, warning that the EU will not hesitate to take action to protect citizens from harm.
X boasts around 300 million users worldwide, with a significant portion located in the EU. As the conversation between Musk and Trump approaches, all eyes are on how the platform will handle its responsibilities under EU regulations.
