Businessman Eric Hovde won the Wisconsin Republican primary for Senate, setting up a crucial race against Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin. Baldwin is seeking a third term and has been building a strong campaign. Hovde has already loaned his campaign $13 million, but Baldwin has outspent him so far. The two candidates have been trading negative ads, with Baldwin criticizing Hovde for comments about children born out of wedlock and Hovde accusing Baldwin of having a failed record on key issues.
In addition to the Senate race, other primary races were held in Minnesota, Connecticut, and Vermont. In Minnesota’s 2nd District, Democratic Rep. Angie Craig will face Marine veteran Joe Teirab. In Connecticut’s 5th District, Democratic Rep. Jahana Hayes will run against former Republican state Sen. George Logan. Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy ran unopposed in his primary in Connecticut. In Vermont, Republican Gov. Phil Scott and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders are expected to win their re-election bids.
The Associated Press projects that voters rejected two ballot measures in Wisconsin that would have limited the powers of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. Overall, the primary results set the stage for several competitive races in the general election in November.
