India introduces new app to reduce fatalities from encounters with wild elephants

Assam in northeastern India has launched the HaatiApp, a mobile app developed by Aaranyak, to warn people of incoming herds of wild elephants and reduce violent encounters between humans and the animals. The state has seen an increase in human-elephant clashes due to habitat loss from urban development, leading to over 200 elephant deaths and 400 human deaths from 2017 to 2022. The app tracks elephant herds’ movements and alerts users to potential collisions. It also allows residents to report elephant sightings, injuries, and property damages, as well as seek compensation from government entities. Aaranyak also released a handbook on using solar-powered fences to keep elephants away from humans and property. Assam is home to the second-largest elephant population in India, with 5,700 elephants, after Karnataka. The state’s vast agriculture and wildlife sanctuaries provide refuge for endangered species like the Asian elephant and Indian one-horned rhinoceros. The app aims to act as an early warning system to help villagers avoid negative interactions with wild elephants and protect both humans and animals in the region.
