Elliot Page recently starred in his first feature film since coming out as transgender, called “Close to You.” The film, which he co-wrote with Dominic Savage, explores the emotional journey of a transgender man named Sam returning home to visit his family for the first time since his transition. The story also involves a reconnection with a high school friend, Katherine, played by Hillary Baack. Despite the lack of written dialogue in the script, the actors had to improvise their scenes, creating a unique and personal experience for Page.
Page expressed that working on the film was a joyful and cathartic experience, allowing him to fully immerse himself in the character and the story. He highlighted the importance of being able to be open and present on set, a level of comfort he may not have had before coming out as trans. The film’s improvised nature allowed for deeper connections to be formed between the characters and added layers of authenticity to the storytelling.
Baack, who is hard of hearing, appreciated the opportunity to portray a character whose deafness was not the central focus of the story but added depth to her connection with Sam as outsiders. The actors had to film long takes, including a memorable 53-minute scene that showcased the tension between Sam and his brother-in-law, Paul.
Ultimately, “Close to You” explores themes of acceptance, love, and the complexities of family dynamics, with poignant moments that resonated deeply with Page. The film allowed him to explore his craft in a new, uninhibited way, creating a meaningful and transformative experience for both the cast and audience.
