Suspect arrested in connection with actor Matthew Perry’s fatal overdose

Actor Matthew Perry, best known for his role on “Friends,” was found dead in his home in October 2023 as a result of an overdose on ketamine. An arrest was made in connection with his death in Southern California on Thursday. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office attributed his death to the acute effects of ketamine, which was found to be at levels equivalent to general anesthesia during surgery in his body. Despite undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety, the medical examiner determined that the ketamine in his system could not be from his therapy due to its short half-life. Contributing factors to his death included drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid use disorder.

Perry had been clean for 19 months at the time of his death after struggling with opioid addiction and alcoholism, which he discussed in his memoir. Law enforcement authorities are known to investigate and bring charges against those who supplied drugs that resulted in high-profile deaths. For example, after the death of Michael Jackson, his private physician was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for providing him with drugs. Similarly, in 2021, federal prosecutors brought charges against individuals who supplied actor Michael K. Williams with fentanyl-laced heroin that led to his death.
