Trump prefers presidential civilian award over military honor due to recipients being alive.

Former President Donald Trump praised Miriam Adelson, a wealthy donor and widow of Sheldon Adelson who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as having received a better award than the Medal of Honor because Medal of Honor recipients are often deceased or injured. Trump spoke at a campaign event on antisemitism where he made these comments, emphasizing that the Medal of Freedom is the highest award for civilians. Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, have criticized Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz for his military record, with Vance particularly focusing on Walz’s decision to retire from the National Guard before deployment to Iraq.

Miriam Adelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018 for her donations to anti-addiction facilities and her work as a doctor. The Medal of Freedom, established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, recognizes civilians who have contributed to the interests of the United States or world peace. In over 60 years, over 600 civilians have received this honor, which can be unilaterally issued by the president.

In contrast, the Medal of Honor, with 3,519 recipients including 60 living recipients, is awarded to military members who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their lives above and beyond the call of duty. Recipients must be engaged in active combat against a foreign foe on behalf of the U.S., with documented acts of valor approved by the president. The citations often detail acts of bravery under fire, such as saving fellow military members or civilians.
