Uncommitted delegates denied request for Palestinian convention speaker

Uncommitted delegates to the Democratic National Convention, elected in protest of President Joe Biden’s support for Israel, requested for a Palestinian American speaker to address the convention. Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign denied this request, causing disappointment among the delegates. The campaign and convention organizers engaged with the delegates and Muslim and Arab community members, but ultimately declined the request.

Despite providing space for discussions on Palestinian issues at the convention, the delegates felt their demand for a speaker was not met. There are only 30 uncommitted delegates out of nearly 4,700, with additional Harris delegates supporting the demand for a cease-fire and arms embargo on Israel. The decision by the campaign could be a turning point for the delegates, who expressed their frustration and disappointment at being denied representation at the convention.

The delegates plan to continue advocating for their cause outside the convention hall, hoping to change the organizers’ minds. Representative Rashida Tlaib criticized the double standard in prioritizing Israeli children over Palestinian children, calling for Palestinian voices to be heard. The delegates expressed their strong emotions, accusing President Biden and Vice President Harris of disregarding Palestinian lives. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party over issues related to Israel and Palestine.
