A tropical storm warning has been issued for Hawaii’s Big Island as Tropical Storm Hone approaches with 50 mph winds. The storm is forecast to pass near or south of the island on Saturday night into early Sunday, bringing potentially life-threatening surf and rip currents. Hawaii County could see up to 10 inches of rain as the storm moves west at 16 mph. The state’s Emergency Management Agency has issued a “red flag” warning for leeward areas of all islands on Saturday due to the risk of wildfires from high winds. In addition to Tropical Storm Hone, there is also a hurricane to the east named Hurricane Gilma, but it is forecast to become a tropical depression before reaching the Hawaiian Islands. Coastal watches or warnings have not been issued for Hurricane Gilma at this time.
