Finding Solace in Sound: BADWOR7H from Kyiv explores the healing power of music amidst conflict

Kyiv-based producer Dima, also known as BADWOR7H, recently spoke to Euronews about living in Ukraine during Russia’s full-scale invasion, the concept of ‘relative safety’, and the escapism music offers. Dima’s musical journey began at the age of 10 when he discovered FL Studio and found solace in creating music. Over time, he delved into the underground genre of Hard Bass, but during the pandemic, he grew disillusioned and decided to change direction.

Teaming up with a friend, Chocollab, they produced an EP titled KYIVENERGO, which they initially wrote in Russian but switched to Ukrainian after the invasion started. The stressful situation led to differences in opinions on safety, causing Dima and his mother to relocate to a nearby town, although the move didn’t bring much peace.

Despite the challenges, Dima continued creating music, finding solace and motivation in negative emotions. He explains how the war has influenced his music and emotions, leading him to adapt to the concept of ‘relative safety’. He stayed in Kyiv due to financial constraints and restrictions, eventually releasing the EP and playing at charity gigs organized to support communities affected by the war.

Amidst the backdrop of explosions and air raid sirens, Dima remains rooted in Kyiv, using music to cope with anxiety and uncertainty. Despite facing obstacles like power blackouts and mental health struggles, he finds comfort in creating music and his deep connections to the city. Through it all, Dima remains determined to stay in Kyiv to support his loved ones and continue pursuing his passion for music.
