Hurricane Hone set to unleash heavy rain and destructive winds on Hawaii’s Big Island

Hurricane Hone is forecasted to bring heavy rainfall and damaging winds to Hawaii’s Big Island, passing south of it early Sunday morning as a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Hawaii County, with residents potentially facing 6 to 12 inches of rain and “life-threatening” surf. Flash flood warnings cover most of the island, including Hilo and Waimea. Social media videos show trees shaking in the wind amid heavy downpour. As of Sunday morning, the hurricane was about 115 miles south-southwest of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, moving west at 10 mph. Over 9,600 utility customers were without power on the Big Island. The storm’s forward speed is expected to decrease after Monday.
