The body of 33-year-old Chenoa Nickerson, who went missing during a flash flood near the Grand Canyon, has been found by a commercial river boat on the Colorado River. Nickerson was swept into Havasu Creek without a lifejacket while hiking near where it meets the Colorado River. Her husband was safely evacuated along with over 100 others. The search effort was focused on the confluence of Havasu Creek and the Colorado River.
The area, known for its iconic blue-green waterfalls, experienced flooding that trapped hikers above and below Beaver Falls. Some were airlifted out while others awaited rescue in the village of Supai. Governor Katie Hobbs activated the Arizona national guard, including Blackhawk helicopters, to aid in evacuations.
In total, an estimated 104 tribal members and tourists were safely evacuated since the flooding began. The Havasupai tribe’s reservation is one of the most remote in the continental US, accessible only by foot, mule, or helicopter. Helicopter evacuations began after bridges were washed away, and rescuers navigated the challenging terrain to reach those in need.
