An explosion in the southern Qala-e-Bakhtiar area of Kabul has resulted in the death of at least six civilians, including a woman, and left another 13 injured. The attacker, wearing explosives on his body, detonated the bomb causing the casualties. The incident is currently under investigation, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, violence has decreased in the country, but the ISIL affiliate in Khorasan Province continues to pose a threat. The group has targeted civilians, foreigners, Taliban officials, and Shia communities through gun and bomb attacks. In 2022, a suicide bombing at an education center in a Shia neighborhood of Kabul resulted in the deaths of at least 53 people, including 46 young women and girls.
The last suicide attack claimed by ISIL in Afghanistan was in Kandahar in March. Despite Taliban claims of suppressing ISIL activities in the country, the group remains active and continues to be a significant security threat. Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has stated that no groups exist in Afghanistan that can pose a threat to anyone, but the recent attacks indicate otherwise.
The ongoing violence in Afghanistan, particularly the recent explosion in Kabul, highlights the continued instability and security challenges facing the country. The government and security forces are working to address these threats and prevent further attacks on civilians.
