Massive demonstrations in Pakistan call for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan | Latest updates on Imran Khan

Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party recently held a rally in Islamabad, marking its first major show of strength since the disputed February elections. Thousands of supporters marched to demand the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in jail for over a year on what his party claims are politically motivated charges. The rally was met with obstacles as the Islamabad administration blocked key entry points into the city, deploying riot police and shipping containers to prevent unrest. PTI supporters managed to push away containers to clear the way, showing their determination to stand by Khan.

PTI leaders and supporters emphasized Khan’s role in saving Pakistan from corrupt politicians and highlighted the authorities’ attempts to suppress attendance at the rally. The event saw clashes between protesters and police, with allegations of stone-pelting and injuries on both sides. Khan, a former cricket star, was ousted from office in April 2022 through a no-trust vote and has been in jail since August 2023, facing trial for allegedly inciting violence. Despite various legal challenges and attempts to ban the PTI party, Khan’s convictions have been suspended or overturned.

International bodies such as the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and a UN panel of rights experts have raised concerns about the legality and motives behind Khan’s detention, viewing it as a political move to disqualify him from running for office. The rally in Islamabad reflects the ongoing political turmoil in Pakistan, with supporters rallying behind Khan and demanding his release as they continue to fight against perceived injustices.
