Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police before the team’s Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The incident occurred near the team’s home stadium during a traffic incident, in which Hill was briefly detained by police before being released. Several teammates witnessed the incident and offered support, and Hill and the other players involved safely arrived at the stadium for the game.
Video posted on social media showed Hill on the ground with officers placing handcuffs on him. Police stated they were reviewing the incident, and Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava praised the immediate steps taken by the police chief and director for calling for an internal review.
Hill, who is entering his third season with the Dolphins, has a history of legal issues, including a 2014 arrest for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend. He was also investigated for an alleged battery incident involving his son in 2019, but no charges were filed. In 2023, Hill settled a dispute with an employee who accused him of assault, but again, no charges were filed.
The NFL has not disciplined Hill for any of these incidents. Rohan Nadkarni, a sports reporter for NBC News, covered the story, with contributions from The Associated Press. The incident involving Hill raises questions about the use of force and the need for internal reviews in such situations.
