Romania and Latvia, both NATO allies of Ukraine, have reported incidents of Russian drones violating their airspace. Romanian authorities confirmed that a Russian drone entered their airspace during nighttime attacks in Ukraine, while Latvia reported a drone crashing in their territory. Both countries strongly condemned these violations by Russia.
NATO’s outgoing deputy secretary-general, Mircea Geoana, criticized Russia’s actions, stating that while there was no evidence of intentional attacks, these acts were irresponsible and potentially dangerous. Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs also condemned the breaches of Romanian and Latvian airspace, calling for concrete action from allies.
Poland has also experienced violations of its airspace by Russian missiles or drones attacking Ukraine. In response, Romanian lawmakers are considering legislation to allow the shooting down of drones entering the country’s airspace during peacetime.
The incidents serve as a reminder of the broader conflict in Ukraine and highlight the need for stronger military aid and support for Ukrainian forces. With Russia continuing its attacks on Ukrainian cities and ports, tensions in the region remain high. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and taking measures to protect the sovereignty of allied countries like Romania and Latvia.
