Trial to begin for three ex-Memphis officers indicted in Tyre Nichols’ death

Jury selection was set to begin in the federal trial of three former Memphis officers charged with violating Tyre Nichols’ civil rights through excessive force and obstruction of justice following his fatal beating in January 2023. The officers pleaded not guilty to the charges and the trial is expected to last three to four weeks, drawing national media attention. Nichols, a Black man, died three days after being beaten by five officers, despite yelling for his mother. The officers claimed Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving, but the police chief stated there was no evidence to support this. Nichols worked for FedEx and enjoyed skateboarding and photography. An autopsy revealed he died from head injuries sustained during the beating. The officers were fired for violating police department policies and were charged with second-degree murder in state court before being indicted federally. Two officers have pleaded guilty in federal court and may testify in the trial. Meanwhile, a trial date in state court has not been set. Nichols’ family is expected to attend the trial, which is significant due to the widespread protests and calls for police reform that were sparked by his death.
