Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Mexico as Potential Tropical Cyclone Six Develops in Gulf

Potential Tropical Cyclone Six, which has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, is expected to become a tropical storm on Monday and potentially strengthen into a hurricane before hitting the northwestern Gulf Coast midweek. Tropical storm watches have been issued for parts of northeastern Mexico, with additional watches or warnings possibly necessary for southern Texas and Louisiana. The system, currently 555 miles south of Port Arthur, Texas, has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving northwest at 5 mph. It is forecast to move offshore of the northern Gulf Coast of Mexico through Tuesday, approaching the Upper Texas and Louisiana coastline on Wednesday. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and the risk of flash flooding from northeastern Mexico to parts of coastal Texas and Louisiana, with rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches and up to 12 inches possible in some areas. Minor coastal flooding is also possible along Mexico’s coast. The hurricane center warns of the potential for life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds along the Upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines starting Tuesday night.
