Lucy Letby: Inquiry Commences Following Chair’s Comment on Convictions, Causing Significant Stress for Parents – Live Updates

Lady Justice Thirlwall has expressed concern over the “outpouring of comment” surrounding Lucy Letby’s convictions for murder and attempted murder, stating that it has caused significant stress for the parents of the victims. As the public inquiry into the tragic events begins, Thirlwall emphasized that the convictions have been upheld by the court of appeal and are not up for review.

The Thirlwall inquiry, led by Lady Justice Thirlwall, will focus on the experiences of the victims’ parents, the conduct of hospital staff regarding Letby, and the effectiveness of NHS management. Unlike other recent inquiries, the proceedings will not be streamed live due to court orders protecting the anonymity of the babies involved.

Legal counsel Rachel Langdale KC emphasized that the inquiry’s primary focus will be on examining the hospital’s response to the deaths, rather than re-evaluating Letby’s convictions. The ultimate goal of the inquiry is to ensure the safety of babies in healthcare settings and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

The inquiry, which is expected to last four months, will hear from core participants including the families of the victims, medical organizations, and hospital staff. Lady Justice Thirlwall plans to release the final report in the autumn of next year, with an emphasis on addressing the systemic issues that allowed such tragedies to occur.
