SpaceX to launch private mission with anticipated first all-civilian spacewalk

A SpaceX capsule carrying four private citizens, including billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, launched on a five-day mission called Polaris Dawn, aiming to achieve the highest orbital altitude since 1972. The crew will conduct a spacewalk, testing new spacesuits and technologies to prepare for future missions to the moon and Mars. The launch was delayed due to technical issues and poor weather.

The crew, which also includes retired Air Force Lt. Col. Scott “Kidd” Poteet and SpaceX engineers Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, will make history by conducting the first all-civilian spacewalk. The mission will involve passing through the Van Allen radiation belt, allowing scientists to study the effects of space radiation on astronauts and the spacecraft.

Isaacman initiated the Polaris program with SpaceX to explore technologies and maneuvers for missions beyond Earth’s orbit, with Polaris Dawn being the first of three planned spaceflights. The mission’s success could pave the way for future space exploration by private citizens and government space agencies, marking a significant step in humanity’s journey to explore space.
